Yemeni Archive is a program of Mnemonic, a non-profit organization which operates globally to help human rights defenders effectively use digital documentation of human rights violations and international crimes to support advocacy, justice, and accountability. 

Yemeni Archive focuses on documenting and preserving evidence of human rights abuses in Yemen. We are human rights defenders, lawyers, archivists, technologists, and open-source investigators dedicated to preserving, memorialising and adding value to publicly available information related to human rights violations. About the Opportunity

We are looking for a professional trainer to conduct a comprehensive training session on collecting and utilizing video as evidence in human rights documentation and investigation. The training will focus on the critical role of video documentation in human rights investigations and legal proceedings. It aims to empower participants with the strategic knowledge necessary to leverage video evidence effectively in their work towards justice and accountability.

The training is intended to prepare Yemeni human rights defenders and civil society organizations to film, collect, verify, and store video documentation during human rights monitoring, documentation, and investigation. After the training, participants will be able to safely and ethically collect critical video documentation, receive and verify third-party video, handle and store video evidence to preserve legal validity, and submit valid, impactful video evidence to legal proceedings and other justice and accountability mechanisms. Participants will also be able to use credible video evidence as part of their human rights advocacy and utilize best practices to protect their safety and the safety and privacy of their subjects.

Key Responsibilities

The selected trainer will be responsible for the following: 

1. Conduct a 5-day online training program for Yemeni CSOs in Arabic
2. Design the agenda, develop training materials,including presentations, pre-reading assignments, and resource guides for participants to use during and after the training, to support the CSOs’ capacity building.

3. Conduct a pre-assessment to understand participants’ baseline knowledge and skills, tailoring the training content to address specific needs and objectives of CSO partners

4. Carry out a post-evaluation at the end of the training program to measure its effectiveness in meeting learning objectives

Training topics:

• Hands-On Video Documentation Training: Teach framing, lighting, and sound capture using cell phones, with practical exercises tailored to the technical resources available to participants. Incorporate examples relevant to the Yemeni context, including capturing physical evidence and witness testimony.
• Video Verification and Editing: Guide participants in using open-source tools for verifying and editing video while maintaining evidence integrity for legal use.
• Safety and Ethics in Videography: Discuss personal safety, digital security, and ethical considerations such as consent and privacy, especially concerning vulnerable subjects.
• Legal Framework and Case Studies: Review the legal standards for video evidence and share case studies demonstrating its impact in human rights advocacy and legal contexts.
• Evaluation: Assess participants’ understanding and skills through practical exercises and feedback sessions.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate should possess the following qualifications:

1. Minimum 5 years of experience in human rights video documentation and advocacy.
2. Degree in Human Rights Law, Media Studies, Journalism, or related field.
3. Expertise in mobile video recording, editing, and open-source verification tools.
4. Fluency in Arabic with excellent English skills
5. Proven track record in delivering effective training and educational programs in sensitive or conflict environments.
6. Familiarity with the Yemeni context and environment
