<h3>Introduction</h3>
This investigation was produced by Sudanese Archive in collaboration with the Human Rights Centre Investigations Lab at UC Berkeley, using open-source tools to verify videos and images of violence. Some video content was contributed by BBC Africa Eye, with support from open-source investigative journalist Benjamin Strick. In this report, we analyzed videos that show how security forces, likely members of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the police, targeted health care workers and blocked access to health care facilities on June 3, 2019. The attacks on health care workers came as security forces dismantled an established sit-in in Khartoum, near the army headquarters, dubbed the ‘June 3rd massacre’ by protesters. The violence killed more than 100 people, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Sudandoctorscommittee/photos/a.1775635796055662/2339370783015491/?type=3&theater">40 of whose bodies</a> were found in the Nile, and injured several hundred more. This investigation is part of a series being produced by the Sudanese Archive to establish clear evidence that RSF used violence and force against protesters on June 3, 2019.
<h3>What happened?</h3>
On June 3, 2019, Sudanese security forces, especially the RSF, led an organized attack on sit-ins and pro-democracy protesters around two key points; <a href="https://sudanesearchive.org/en/investigations/june3-overview.html">the Army Headquarters and Mosque University of Khartoum</a>. The Sudanese Archive was also able to confirm through verifying videos and images from the day that security forces also surrounded hospitals, beat people on the hospital grounds, and injured medical workers.
A <a href="https://phr.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/PHR-Report-Sudan-Chaos-and-Fire-March-2020-ExecutiveSummary-ENG.pdf">report by Physicians for Human Rights</a>, conducted through interviews and clinical evaluations of 30 survivors and witnesses, found indications of attacks on health care workers, including “harassment, intimidation, or violence; forcing detained health workers to provide medical care; preventing access to health care; and attacks on hospitals and informal sit-in clinics” at the following locations:

<li>Makeshift Detention Site</li>
<li>Continuing Professional Development Center</li>
<li>University of Khartoum</li>
<li>Al-Kahriba “Electricity Building” Clinic</li>
<li>Al-Moallem Hospital</li>
<li>Royal Care Hospital</li>
</ul>
According to the <a href="https://phr.org/our-work/resources/chaos-and-fire-an-analysis-of-sudans-june-3-2019-khartoum-massacre/">report</a>, RSF soldiers specifically targeted physicians and, in some cases, separated them from other protesters in a bid to intimidate them. In one example, general surgeon Dr. Yaseen recounted to PHR that while preparing to operate on a patient with a head wound at a medical center around four kilometers from the Army HQ, a bullet went through to the patient’s chest, killing him.
As well, there were numerous reports on social media, particularly Twitter and Facebook, of security forces targeting medical centres on June 3 itself, as the events occurred. For example, a user with the handle of @mohammedAlBshA tweeted that he was shot in the femur (upper leg) because he was carrying a man shot in the head. His Tweet said that an RSF soldier then beat him until he dropped the injured man and the soldier shot that man with another bullet in the head, following that with, “now, you can bury him.”

Activists and people on the scene also reported that injured protesters were blocked from arriving to receive treatment at hospitals.

A spokesperson for the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors (CCSD) <a href="https://www.npr.org/2019/06/03/729329601/sudan-security-forces-open-fire-on-protesters-in-capital">told NPR on June 3, 2019</a>: “The Transitional Military Council forces are firing live ammunition inside East Nile Hospital and chasing peaceful protestors inside the hospital&#39;s campus. Royal Care Hospital in Buri area is under siege by the Transitional Military Council (TMC) forces at the moment. TMC&#39;s forces are preventing volunteers from reaching the hospital.&quot;
Video evidence of these incidents can be difficult to access as in some cases people deleted the videos or stopped filming under orders from security services, or deleted the videos and images shortly after posting them. The Sudanese Archive worked to document and preserve as many videos and images as possible in our archive. Using these, the Sudanese Archive has so far been able to confirm:
<ol>
<li>the presence of security forces outside Royal Care hospital grounds, then entering the grounds by force, beating people within hospital grounds, and the sound of shots fired outside the hospital
</li>
<li>a video showing an injured medical worker within the Al Moalem hospital, security forces injuring someone on hospital grounds, and the presence of RSF forces outside the hospital earlier that day
</li>
</ol>
<h3>Visual evidence</h3>

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/Ismail.Kushkush/posts/10157879047771002">In a Facebook post that was published at 7:21 a.m.</a>, a well-known journalist shared two images reported to have been taken outside Royal Care International Hospital. While both images have been posted by other users or in other locations online, such as <a href="https://twitter.com/aseelrashid_/status/1135422170417508352">here</a> and <a href="https://sudan.liveuamap.com/en/2019/3-june-outside-royal-care-hospital-burri-in-khartoum">here</a>, neither appear to have been on the Internet before June 3, 2019, according to searches with TinEye and Google Image Search. An analysis of shadows in the photos using SunCalc also corroborates the timeline, indicating they were likely to have been taken around 7:20 a.m.

In the first photo, a number of land cruisers carrying security forces in beige fatigues, similar to ones worn by RSF, drive along a street. The land cruisers are similar to the Toyotas used by the military or RSF. There are also machine guns mounted on these cruisers. We located that one around 15.598472, 32.571452 using Google Earth’s historical imagery and looking up the name of a restaurant that shows in Arabic as ‘كفتنجى’, ‘Koftangi’. The below images show the location of an electricity tower and a street heading north plus the restaurant’s building.

In the second image, we can see the road takes a curve in front of several distinctive buildings, which can also be seen in Google Earth satellite imagery of Royal Care Hospital. This indicates the forces were around the coordinates 15.597373, 32.572698, just south of Royal Care, opposite Al Amal Specialized Hospital, driving east.

These images indicate that it is likely there was a large presence of RSF soldiers in close proximity to Royal Care International Hospital, Al Amal Specialized Hospital, and other medical facilities nearby.
<h4>Royal Care International Hospital</h4>
Reports of security forces blocking access to Royal Care and targeting hospital workers
Early on June 3, 2019, as reports began circulating of security forces attacking the sit-in, there were also reports of the same forces surrounding the Royal Care International Hospital, a health care hub receiving many of the injured protestors.
For example, a Facebook post published at 9:40 a.m. by the CCSD reported that security forces had surrounded the hospital, “A total siege is being enforced around Royal Care Hospital preventing medical workers from reaching it.”

<a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2019/06/sudan-military-attacks-hospital-expels-wounded-protesters-190604200747631.html">A medic also told Al-Jazeera</a> that RSF soldiers had ordered Royal Care Hospital staff to expel wounded protesters, according to a story published the following day. Other sources told the news outlet that the RSF had also arrested Waleed Abdullah, a doctor they shot in the leg.
Sounds of shooting outside the hospital
<a href="https://twitter.com/7amask1/status/1135452705470763008?s=20">In another video</a> that was posted on Twitter, there are indications of RSF shooting just outside the hospital. The video was posted to Twitter at 9:46 a.m., and a shadow analysis, using the online tool Suncalc, corroborates this time, indicating that the video was most likely captured around 9:00 a.m.

In it, the videographer appears to be running inside the hospital with other people while shooting sounds are heard outside. It appears to have been filmed in a parking area in the northeastern part of the hospital. In the footage, we can see the name of the hospital in Arabic and English, a gate, a security booth and two distinctive buildings which can be matched with the surroundings of Royal Care Hospital on Google Earth around this point: 15.600006, 32.571304.

<a href="https://twitter.com/DrMohBabiker/status/1135592190464466945">Another video</a> at the same location was posted at 7 p.m. Khartoum time on June 3rd, but appears to have been filmed just shortly after the last one of the sound of gunfire. This video shows what appears to be police forces making their way into the Royal Care Hospital, attacking and beating people.
The security forces are wearing uniforms that match those of police as seen in multiple published images from <a href="https://www.dw.com/en/eu-suspends-migration-control-projects-in-sudan-amid-repression-fears/a-49701408">the media</a> and <a href="https://unamid.unmissions.org/un-state-liaison-functions-provide-human-rights-training-sudan-police-north-darfur">the United Nations</a>. In the video, one of the officers heads toward a man in what looks like a medical gown, likely one of the hospital’s medical staff, and the person filming rushes back. This video appears to have been captured at around 10:20 a.m. according to shadow analysis.

<h4>AL MOALEM MEDICAL CITY HOSPITAL</h4>
Security forces surrounding Al Moalem Medical City
<a href="https://twitter.com/jr_awad/status/1141089422429106182">In this graphic video</a>, taken from inside the hospital grounds, security forces, which are likely to be RSF <a href="https://www.camopedia.org/index.php?title=Sudan">based on their uniforms</a>, can be seen walking outside the Al Moalem Medical City hospital. At the first appearance of the shot of the security forces, two men in jeans and T-shirts can be seen running east, chased by a man in a beige military uniform resembling the RSF. He is holding up a stick and appears to be about to hit them. At least a dozen other security forces can be seen walking in the other direction, toward the west, all wearing beige uniforms of different shades. Several are holding weapons, including large firearms. The video also shows numerous people with injuries or bleeding, seeking treatment inside the hospital, and shows others standing looking out at the security forces through the gate.

Sudanese Archive was able to verify the video was taken at the hospital by its distinctive red, metal gate and the dotted curb/road across from the hospital entryway. Though the Twitter user says the video was captured at 6:27 a.m., there are faint shadows in the video that suggest it might have been taken around 11:20 a.m. according to shadow analysis.

Security beating someone within hospital grounds
This <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4_rnpDtwbI&has_verified=1">video</a> which claims RSF attacked the injured on Al Moalem grounds was posted to Youtube at 22:32. This video was also verified by the HRC and reported on in the PHR report, corroborated by testimony. In the video, we can see about 10 men in police and RSF clothing beating a person who is on the ground. The building structure and color in the video match those of Al Moalem Hospital. By comparing satellite imagery and online images of the hospital, we could confirm the window shape and building color to those in the video.

By comparing landmarks with imagery on Google Earth, it can be concluded the incident likely happened around 15.611240, 32.551457, on the grounds of Al Moalem hospital

<a href="https://twitter.com/jr_awad/status/1141092865432530944">Another video</a>, which was provided to us by the BBC Africa team, shows the indoors of a hospital that matches the inside of the Al Moalem Medical City. The video was posted to Twitter on June 18, 2019, but the Twitter post says it was captured on June 3 at 5:41 a.m. While it’s not possible to confirm this, as the video’s metadata will not include the time it was filmed, there are no indications that it appeared on the Internet prior to June 3.
In the video, we can see amid many people with injuries, a man wearing a hospital uniform. In the picture, the shirt says Al Moalem Medical City under the hospital’s logo which we cross-referenced with the hospital’s <a href="https://www.facebook.com/366195896904256/photos/a.506832769507234/506832439507267">Facebook page</a>. The person filming and another person in the video call for help, saying “a doctor was injured,” after which the camera moves to what seems like a bullet wound in the lower abdomen.

<a href="https://twitter.com/jr_awad/status/1141092865432530944">A video</a> posted by the same user, from the same hospital, reportedly taken around the same time, shows other victims being treated for their gunshot wounds, while in the background we can hear a woman screaming about the military and the sounds of firearm shooting. Other people can be seen in this video wearing similar blue hospital shirts to that worn by the man with the bullet wound in the earlier video. 
<h3>Conclusion</h3>
The Sudanese Archive was able to confirm the presence of security forces outside Royal Care hospital grounds, then entering the grounds by force, beating people within hospital grounds, and the sound of shots fired outside the hospital, as well as a video showing an injured man, likely a medical worker, within the Al Moalem hospital, and the presence of RSF forces outside the hospital earlier that day. This evidence, corroborated by a research report based on testimony by the Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) and numerous media reports, allows us to conclude that RSF and police targeted medical staff and facilities on June 3, 2019, disrupting medical services for injured protesters - protesters who likely sustained their injuries because of RSF and other security forces, as seen in a <a href="https://sudanesearchive.org/en/investigations/june3-overview.html">previous report</a>.

<h3>Background</h3>In July 2020, there were reports from multiple news outlets and international agencies of a violent attack taking place in the North Darfur community of Fataburno. According to the <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="http://www.acjps.org/north-darfur-urgent-call-to-the-transitional-government-investigate-the-killing-of-12-peaceful-protesters-and-injury-of-14-others-in-kotoum-city/">African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies</a>, protesters had organized a sit-in beginning July 6, calling for increased security against armed militias from Arab tribes. The reports said a violent attack occurred against peaceful protesters on July 13, <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="http://www.acjps.org/north-darfur-urgent-call-to-the-transitional-government-investigate-the-killing-of-12-peaceful-protesters-and-injury-of-14-others-in-kotoum-city/">claiming the lives of 12 and injuring 14 others</a>. On the same day and in response to the reports of the attack, a security committee visited villages where violence allegedly happened but their starting point was from villages mostly under siege by Arab militias. Reports said protesters went on to burn the Kutum police station where the delegation tried to take cover, about 18 kilometers from Fataburno.<h3>The evidence</h3>The Sudanese Archive analysed a video that was likely shot on July 13, showing what appears to be dead bodies, strewn on the ground, the sound of shooting, and people screaming. <a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" href="https://www.facebook.com/shahinaz.jamal/videos/3123265044417588/?_rdc=1&amp;_rdr">The video</a>, which contains graphic content, was published on July 13, 2020 with a description saying it shows the consequences of the attack.The video begins showing a group of mostly women and children clustered together, apparently taking shelter. The women are screaming and shouting, and children cry. The women are sheltering under a roof between two yellow-walled buildings with green doors and support beams. The sun is high in the sky, casting only short shadows beside the building. For the first 5 minutes of the video, the woman talk among each other while the videographer walks from side to side, offering glimpses of the surrounding area, including knocked over chairs and some buildings and a radio or cell tower in the distance. At 5 minutes into the 12-minute video, a few of the women venture out, one wielding a stick, but quickly retreat as sounds of weaponry can be heard and smoke is seen in the distance.The video appears to have been shot within Fataburno, around the coordinates: 14.143209, 24.537176. Sudanese Archive was able to determine this location by matching the location of the radio or electricity tower and key buildings, including a house with a surrounding wall and another house adjacent to it, seen as the videographer walks around. As well, based on the weather that day and position and length of shadows in the video, the video was most likely taken around midday, aligning with other reports of the attack.<figure class="image"><img style="aspect-ratio:1222/1000;" src="/uploads/fataburno1_b8a69dbe67.png" alt="" width="1222" height="1000"><figcaption>Likely location of the video based on the matching of buildings and a radio or electricity tower to satellite imagery. Source: Google Maps</figcaption></figure>As the video goes on, the videographer and others move out of the building toward the east, where other people can be seen. Two people are shown carrying a limp man in a white shirt and brown trousers, and laying him on the ground. He appears to have been killed, and has signs of injury. The video then skips slightly, and shows another victim: a man in a black shirt, who appears to have been young and is clearly dead, laying on the ground, injuries apparent. The video analysed was posted on Facebook and accompanied by a list of 14 names of those it purports were killed on that day. In the video, Sudanese Archive was able to confirm two victims are visible, both who appear to have been killed.

<h2>Introduction</h2>
This investigation is a collaborative project between the Sudanese Archive and the Human Rights Center Investigation Lab, UC Berkeley, on the anniversary of the June 3rd massacre that killed over 100 people, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Sudandoctorscommittee/photos/a.1775635796055662/2339370783015491/?type=3&theater">40 of whose bodies</a> were later collected from the Nile, and injured at least 326 others, as a result of Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and other security forces violently dispersing sit-ins across the city of Khartoum. Our report will explore how the RSF rounded up protesters, violently attacking them, as seen in footage from that day that we have verified and chronolocated using open-source tools. This report is the first of a series of investigations related to June 3rd to further establish evidence of the RSF’s - and other security forces’ - violence against protesters.
<h2>What happened?</h2>
Almost two months after the fall of Omar al-Bashir, Sudan’s former long-standing President, scores of Sudanese people continued to protest on the streets of Khartoum and in cities all across the country. Though the country rid itself from its 30-year ill-famed dictator, protesters felt that an entire regime was still in charge. This prompted activists and pro-democracy groups such as the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors (CCSD) and Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA), to call for continued protests. These protests were accompanied by strikes and sit-ins, the most prominent of which were around the Army Headquarters, also famously referred to as Al-Qiyada Street.
In the early hours of June 3rd 2019, the CCSD announced on its Facebook page that there were indications that the Sudanese military might be planning to disperse the Army HQ sit-in. In the post, the CCSD called for all medical professionals to be alert lest there was need for medical assistance.

Al-Qiyada Street served as a very important venue for hundreds of protesters, who were distributed over a space of 10 square kilometers. The area included points of gathering around Nile Street, Al-Imam Al-Mahdi Street, and most prominent of all, the Mosque University of Khartoum.
As the day progressed, the CCSD’s warning became real: army and security forces started rounding up protesters, especially around two important points;the first was the Army HQ and the second was Mosque University of Khartoum.
<h3>Prior indications of violence</h3>
According to a report by <a href="https://phr.org/our-work/resources/chaos-and-fire-an-analysis-of-sudans-june-3-2019-khartoum-massacre/">Physicians for Human Rights</a> (PHR), many perpetrators identified themselves as RSF to their victims. The same report indicated that before June 3rd, particularly towards the end of May, authorities redistributed security forces around the sit-in location, replacing peaceful forces with hostile ones. Those forces were armed with a variety of weapons including teargas, batons, whips, sticks and firearms, even Kalashnikov rifles.
Upon verification and analysis of more than a hundred videos and images, it became clear that the attacks were semi-organized, if not premeditated. The below visuals show locations of RSF, protesters and violent acts. The map clearly shows the proximity of attacks and indicates security forces had barricaded that part of Khartoum.
The Sudanese Archive obtained a copy of a document that was sent to embassies in Khartoum recommending employees and diplomats stay away from the vicinity of the Army HQ, all Khartoum bridges and around any sit-ins or protests taking place around the country. The document is dated May 30th, 2019 and seems to have been sent out by Sudan’s ministry of foreign affairs.

<h3>Visual evidence</h3>
The Sudanese Archive team analysed hundreds of visual content. This article highlights a few main points to give shape to the dawn of June 3rd, while others will appear in future investigations. While some of the verified videos were live-streamed, others were posted later, which could have been due to an internet outage that took place in June 2019, hindering footage filmed on June 3rd from being posted to social media.

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/raniwow/videos/2291679637553226/">This half-hour video</a> which was live streamed at 4:45 a.m. June 3rd, starts off showing protesters chanting, but the lighting is too poor to determine the location. Around 5:54 minutes into the video, the videographer, who is later identified as Rani Farah, moves towards a bridge with arches. There is a small shrub at the road divider and a tree at the left of the frame, closer to the bridge. By cross-referencing the bridge caught on video with other bridges in Khartoum, the Blue Nile Bridge appears to be the one in the video. From the positioning of the trees, the bridge and a dashed side road, it looks like the videographer moved from a spot on the road around 15.613111, 32.545371 west toward the bridge 15.612874, 32.544257.

Further along in the video, are scenes of what look like security forces in blue fatigues, which <a href="https://camopedia.org/index.php?title=Sudan">camopedia</a> indicates belong to Sudan’s police forces.

Around 18:45 in the video, an obelisk can be seen and by checking Google Earth, it can be matched to be Mosque University of Khartoum. There are also two radio towers when the videographer turns around. This shows that it was filmed at 15.610368, 32.544879, in an intersection opposite the university.

Fast forward to 25:07, the videographer crosses from the intersection near the Mosque University of Khartoum and stays at a point on the road, around 15.610027, 32.545273, until the end of the video.

Shooting can be heard in the video, coming from multiple directions, until the videographer appears to receive a hit himself. Later, pictures also posted on social media of Rani Farah show him in the hospital after having been shot in the chest.

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/midoeoker/videos/10157581163470680/">Another video</a> that was confirmed to have been shot near Mosque University of Khartoum shows the university’s obelisk as well as the radio towers. From 0:01 to 3:04, the person filming passes by three roadblocks and a gate. This is consistent with the satellite images confirming the video was filmed at 15.611353, 32.544543. The person then walks through a blockade that doubles as a gate. This is when the obelisk can first be seen, indicating the gate is closer to the Mosque University of Khartoum than the roadblocks. This relationship is mirrored in the satellite imagery.

At 6:28 in the video, officers can be seen beating a protester with a cane. An injured man is also hit by a police officer near 15.609920, 32.544720 at 7:12 in the video. This man is the leader of a large group of protesters that seems to be being herded by officers. Officers begin swatting and hitting these protesters at 7:18 in the video. A police officer can also be seen violently herding a protester at around 8:01in the video.

The video was posted online on July 10th 2019 but through verification using Wolfram Alpha for weather, it appeared to be consistent with the grey, clear sky of June 3rd. A reverse-image search of photos from the video on Yandex, a tool to search for images on the Internet, found that none of the images appeared prior to July 10th.
The closest to June 3rd satellite images found on Google Earth was taken on June 1st, 2019. However, this image shows a large green tent to the east of the obelisk still standing intact. In the video, this tent has been completely burned. This indicates the video was filmed after June 1st, 2019. Another image on Google Earth was taken on June 7th, 2019. In it, the roadblocks, tents, and building on the corner north of the obelisk have been cleared away. This indicates that the video was filmed before June 7th, 2019. This establishes a range from June 1st-7th, 2019.

The aggressors in this video are identified as the police forces and RSF (which can be identified as those wearing sandy brown uniforms) by looking up their fatigues on Camopedia. The video also seemed to have been filmed by an RSF officer who is visible at one point in the livestream.

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/345921859401430/videos/483104572253697/">This video</a> was also taken near Mosque University of Khartoum and Nile Street. Because of this, the Human Rights Center (HRC) decided to make a composite panorama of the area by taking multiple screenshots of the video and stitching them together. They used these panoramic images to scan for open courtyard areas with light to medium vegetation, a right angle fence immediately next to two buildings, and several tall/long buildings with blue water containers on top directly opposite the aforementioned two buildings. One that looked similar was found using Google Earth at 15.612386, 32.547792.

The key similarity that helped our researchers verify the location of the video in question was the right-angled fence, the two buildings immediately next to it, and the nearby vegetation. The person filming begins the video by facing a relatively tall fence (west). He then turns to the right (north) and shows an approximately 2-3 story building. The fence intersects at a right angle close to/in front of this building (the initial wall runs perpendicular to it, the wall made visible next runs parallel to the building and continues off to the right (east). There is light vegetation (several mid-height shrubs) in front of the corner formed by this fence.
The men in the video are wearing two kinds of fatigues showing that there are RSF and police forces. From 00:03 to 00:42, security forces, which appear to be mostly RSF, can be seen berating a young man and threateningly moving sticks at him. This is followed by a scene showing officers chasing a man who’s crawling away and beating him with sticks. Another graphic scene shows an RSF officer holding a gun and shouting at a man lying on his back whose head seems to bleed profusely. This is followed by another supposed protester being beaten by officers. It is not clear whether the man is conscious at that point or not, but the soldiers get him up eventually and take him somewhere.

Though we cannot be sure that the footage was shot on June 3rd, there’s a strong indication it was shot near or on that date because of features and findings deduced from Google Earth and Wolfram Alpha.
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1qkDRhqnoU&has_verified=1">The next video</a> takes place at a different location, near the Army HQ. The video is quite graphic and shows protesters trying to move a dead body while one is screaming “They killed one! They killed one!” while gunshots are heard in the background. As protesters run from the gunshots, to their right we can see the Army HQ building and the arched structure surrounding it, while to their left there are makeshift tents. This indicates the video was shot at 15.606288, 32.544943.

Though the video was uploaded at 9:19 a.m. on June 3rd, it is estimated that the video was captured around 5:30 a.m. on June 3rd, based on our analysis.
<a href="https://www.facebook.com/wail.offical/videos/919509185056811/">Another video</a> captured around the Army HQ shows what looks like an army officer in a beige uniform swatting and beating protesters from inside a building that turns out to be at the front of the Army HQ. When the camera pans across, the arch that was seen in the previous scene can be seen above. The protesters in the video can be seen looking scared, ducking away from the stick to avoid the beating while looking around in apprehension.

That structure was then matched and verified using Google Earth indicating the video was filmed around 15.608083, 32.547111.

This video was also mostly likely captured around 5:30 a.m. on June 3rd despite being posted on July 9th, based on analysis conducted by the Sudanese Archive and the HRC of shadows, weather, and corroborating the video contents with others showing events taking place on that day.
<h2>Conclusion</h2>
After analysis of multiple videos and live streams showing violence that occurred on June 3rd, the Sudanese Archive determined that much of the violence that led to protesters injuries and deaths was as a direct result of the behaviour of Sudanese security forces. Verified videos indicated a strong military presence and excessive violence against protesters. The videos also helped us confirm that security forces surrounded the sit-in location and dismantled it employing violent tactics against protesters. This is the first of several upcoming investigations into specific violent incidents that occurred on that day.

Removals of Sudanese human rights content: November 2019

To date, Sudanese Archive has preserved and processed 18,235 videos from YouTube. Many of these have been <a href="https://sudanesearchive.org/en/tech-advocacy">made unavailable</a> for a variety of reasons and 2,568 videos remain unavailable as of October 2019. Sudanese Archive has also preserved 54,955 Tweets.
Some of this content includes documentation of human rights violations. It is securely preserved by Sudanese Archive and available upon request.

The Sudanese Archive has logged reports and media files of protests in 28 cities across Sudan on June 30. The investigation team was able to verify media portraying violence in six of those cities: Al Fashir, Al Qadarif, Atbara, Khartoum, Khartoum North (Al-Kahrtoum Bahry), and Omdurman. The Sudanese Archive also gathered media purported to depict violence in two other cities - El Obeid and Kassala - remaining to be verified. The Archive monitoring team also incorporates public statements from credible associations and political figures in the database.<h1>Verifying the media files</h1>The Sudanese Archive collaborates with the Syrian Archive and the Berkeley Human Rights Center for support with verification. Each verified video went through basic geolocation to ensure it was shot in Sudan. The Sudanese Archive has also identified the city and location coordinates. This was done by comparing reference points (e.g. buildings, signposts, mountains ranges) with Google Earth satellite imagery. The Sudanese Archive also verified the date the media was posted and likely date of its filming, by cross referencing the publishing date on social media platforms (ex. Twitter and Facebook) with dates from reports concerning the same incident and research of the shadows in the videos. The Syrian Archive also works with local journalists, human rights activists, and staff of medical facilities. The Archive investigation team also cross-references the data with that of credible associations and media agencies.<h1>Submitting videos</h1>In order to provide the most complete and accurate information, we are always looking for new evidence to collect and add to our database. On June 30, 2019, thousands of Sudanese protesters took to the streets renewing the demand to shift power from the transitional military council (TMC) to civilians. In this investigation, Sudanese Archive has researched violence perpetrated by security forces against protesters in Al-Qadarif city on June 30, 2019, as demonstrations took place across the country in the ‘million march.’ The Sudanese Archive verified three videos showing protesters running from teargas and the sounds of shooting, protesters being rounded up by security forces on hospital grounds, and protesters assisting an injured man. The investigation was produced in collaboration with the Berkeley Human Rights Investigation Lab.
<h3>What happened?</h3>
Following a deadly crackdown in Khartoum by Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on civilians, which killed more than 100 protesters and injured several hundred others on June 3rd, 2019, civil society organizations called for wide-spread protests across Sudan in a collective effort to demonstrate against military rule and the violence that took place on <a href="https://sudanesearchive.org/en/datasets/june-03-security">June 3rd</a>.
In the run up to June 30th, the Sudanese Professionals Association (SPA) led the organization of a ‘millionth march,’ mourning the protesters killed during the massacre on June 3rd.

While protesters went out opposing the brutal dispersal of June 3rd sit-ins, the Central Committee of Sudan Doctors (CCSD) was documenting violence and human rights violations in all of Sudan. The CCSD’s first tweet announced the death of a protester in his twenties, in the city of Atbara in River Nile State. There were reports of security forces targeting protesters in cities across Sudan.
Later in the day, CCSD announced that TMC militias, referring to RSF, raided Al-Qadarif Hospital firing live ammunition and causing casualties.

CCSD also shared figures of the injured in Al-Qadarif city: 40 injured, most of whom sustained bullet wounds or were hit with a teargas canister.
<h3>The evidence</h3>
Sudanese Archive verified three key videos recorded in Al-Qadarif on June 30, 2019.
The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Legan.mogawm55/videos/449749485857900">first video</a> shows a number of protesters chanting “مدنية” or “civilian rule”. In the video, protesters run as sounds of what appears to be teargas being shot are heard. In a few cases, a white gas can be seen emerging from what appears to be teargas canisters. The videographer says “the army that’s supposed to protect us is firing teargas.” The footage does not show who the perpetrators are.
In the video, we can see a few landmarks that are also identifiable on Google Maps. In the video there is a white-and-black checkered water tank, a black-and-yellow pavement dividing the road into two lanes and a lush tree of distinctive foliage. Based on these markers, the video was likely filmed around these coordinates: 14.040272, 35.388586.

In one frame - albeit somewhat blurry - is sign that reads “Al-Qadarif Teaching Hospital” in Arabic. The hospital is located across from the identified coordinates where the video appears to have been taken.

As well, the weather that day matches what’s seen in the video, according to an analysis conducted with SunCalc. This analysis also indicated that the video was likely recorded between 1 and 2 p.m.; a timeline that would indicate the protesters at the scene just before reports that security forces raided Al-Qadarif Hospital. CCSD announced the raid later in the day.
The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/100005042523030/videos/1391924187652319/?_rdc=1&_rdr">second video</a> shows what look like civilians being rounded up by police forces, dressed in blue uniforms and RSF, dressed in beige. In the video, protesters can be seen raising their arms and towards the end, running from what sounds like gunshots. There is also a waft of white gas that looks like teargas.
The videographer, then, says that security forces are firing live ammunition and teargas at protesters on hospital grounds.
The footage bears some similarity to the first video as we can see a multi-layered building and the chequered tank from the first video. We compared other landmarks to Google Maps and found for example the blue box and a two-sheet, green building on the map. That led us to these coordinates: 14.039456, 35.388220, which places security forces on Al-Qadarif Hospital grounds. This corroborates CCSD allegations.

Though the shadows we can see in the video are not 100% clear, the video was likely taken around 2:30 p.m.
A <a href="https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=890985224582510">third video</a> shows a man likely shot in the elbow, bleeding while running. In the background, sounds of shooting can be heard while a group of people are carrying the injured man supposedly away from the shooting.
These three verified videos appear to be filmed in or around Al-Qadarif Hospital.

A building named Zidan Commercial Business on Google maps matches the green structure seen in the video. The video was likely taken around 1:35 p.m., which would align with the timeline of the other two videos, although for this video the shadow analysis has a lower degree of confidence.

None of the videos show a perpetrator explicitly firing a weapon, although the third video shows an injured protester being assisted.
<h3>Conclusion</h3>
The Sudanese Archive was able to verify videos showing an injured protester, that protesters fled teargas and sounds of gunfire, and the presence of security forces appearing to be police and RSF on hospital grounds rounding up and firing teargas at protesters in Al-Qadarif on June 30, 2019. These findings also corroborate the CCSD’s statement saying officers were on hospital grounds, shooting and firing teargas.
