We are looking forward to our staff’s participation at RightsCon this year as both speakers and attendees. Since the first lockdown due to COVID-19 took place in 2020, RightsCon decided to hold the whole conference online. This change made attendance much more possible for a larger number of people. It also remains a reminder of how critical technology has become to our work and lives.
The first engagement at RightsCon this year will be a tech demo by Mnemonic which is a pre-recorded session on an internal tool for searching large archives of video content documenting human rights violations and making it accessible to researchers and journalists. This demo will be presented by Julian Laplace, Technologist at Mnemonic.

Another Community Lab will be hosted by Mnemonic on solidarity across the digital evidence labor pipeline. This Lab will present the whole pipeline of the evidence from the moment it starts as data being recorded on users’ devices, to uploading it on the internet, to archiving it by open source investigators, to handling it by legal advocates for case-building initiatives. Libby McAvoy, Mnemonic’ Legal Advisor, Michael Elsanadi, Mnemonic’s Investigator, and Raja Althaibani, Senior Program Manager for the Middle East and North Africa at WITNESS will all be speaking at this Lab.

Lastly, Sudan Archive is hosting a session on a collaborative project between them and the Ayin Network that was launched in November 2021 on advocacy and archiving with citizen documentation. Mnemonic’s Executive Director, Hadi Al Khatib, along with Trevor Snapp, Co-Director of Gisa Group, and Tom Rhodes, Managing Editor of Ayin Network will all be handling this discussion while mentioning similar documentation trends from Ukraine to Burma.
