Our legal work involves building digital evidence archives, litigation support, and open source investigations into international crimes and human rights violations.</p><p>Legal &amp; Research is a cross-functional programme at Mnemonic: it fills an essential coordination role, aiming to connect the dots on research methods and activities across all Mnemonic programmes and ensure good compliance with open source research and evidence standards. More specifically, Mnemonic’s legal team endeavours to secure the evidentiary potential of the open source archives and support all Mnemonic programmes in their efforts to leverage the archived material to advance justice and accountability for serious harms including human rights violations and international crimes. Mnemonic legal contributes to legal projects or potential legal projects such as case-building work, requests for information, and any other activities involving legal systems or analysis.&nbsp;</p><p>In the day-to-day, Mnemonic’s Legal &amp; Research team members are embedded in research projects and workflows, maintain Mnemonic’s Research Handbook and its accompanying resources, support collaboration across programmes, and review all research outputs.&nbsp;</p><h2><strong>About the Role</strong></h2><p>As a Legal Advisor for Mnemonic you will provide technical legal support to all research teams and programmes: Syrian Archive, Yemeni Archive, Sudanese Archive, Ukrainian Archive, Rapid Response, and our Technical Team. Your input might include advice on legal interventions, detailed review of research outputs, feedback on the design and implementation of new research tools or methods, and more.&nbsp;</p><p>Our team is small but impactful, meaning this role entails both groundbreaking advancements in international legal practice and essential-but-mundane system maintenance responsibilities. You will help to brainstorm innovative ways of leveraging digital open source evidence for accountability, and you will also meticulously check all legal outputs for basic typos and formatting issues. You will be involved in building cases for creative and strategic impact – sometimes by formatting dozens of footnotes under tight deadlines. We are looking for a new team member who is fully on board for all that this working spectrum entails, and who recognises that these types of jobs can often involve more time on the daily grind than the cutting edge.</p><p>Also consider that new(er) areas of legal and investigative practice can be uncomfortable. As one of very few in-house legal advisors, you will have the responsibility of being the kind of lawyer who is a patient and clear interpreter between legal standards or protocols on the one hand and the practicalities of research or tech on the other. Much of your day-to-day will be spent talking about the law with colleagues who trained as researchers, journalists, and technologists – not other lawyers.&nbsp;</p><p>Applicants should also be aware that there will be requirements to review graphic content of atrocities and to travel internationally. Applicants should anticipate working in a multi-lingual, culturally diverse, and cross-disciplinary environment.</p><h2><strong>Description of responsibilities</strong></h2><ul><li>Conducting in-depth reviews of investigations and other research to ensure high quality outputs that adhere to Mnemonic’s Research Handbook guidance and policies;</li><li>Supporting the development and implementation of the Archives’ legal strategies and coordinating their implementation, such as by providing investigative support to strategic casebuilding coalitions;</li><li>Fielding requests related to litigation and other legal accountability efforts and supporting research teams’ responses to these requests, including by identifying lines of inquiry and working with researchers to structure responses;</li><li>Working with research teams among the various archives to conceptualise, design and implement new dataset or research projects that are structured to best serve the goals and needs of related legal accountability work;</li><li>Contributing to database analysis, research, and output creation;</li><li>Maintaining internal information tracking and case management systems;</li><li>Tracking litigation trends and driving research projects that support and advance accountability and survivor-centred justice, in line with the Archives’ legal strategies;</li><li>Supporting the organisation-wide implementation of Research Handbook policies and guidance, while taking into account context and project-specific needs and</li><li>As necessary, supporting other administrative and operations activities including—but not limited to—grant writing, copyediting, and other content drafting.</li></ul><h2><strong>Your profile</strong></h2><ul><li>Advanced degree and qualifications or commensurate experience in international criminal law, international humanitarian law, or international human rights law;</li><li>1-5 years working experience in this or a relevant area of work, noting that the role and responsibilities may be adapted in line with your experience;</li><li>Ability to work from Berlin (desirable) or from a timezone within +/- 2 hours of Berlin;</li><li>Fluency in English;</li><li>Strong or fluent Arabic language skills (desirable);</li><li>Extensive knowledge of and/or human rights working experience in the Syrian, Yemeni, Ukrainian or Sudanese contexts (desirable);</li><li>Strong interest (previous experience desirable) in working with digital evidence and open source investigation in legal proceedings;</li><li>Strong interest (previous experience desirable) in the investigation and evidence management aspects of international accountability projects or legal proceedings;</li><li>Clear commitment to community, solidarity and human rights-based approaches to technological advancement and international accountability;</li><li>Excellent legal writing skills; and</li><li>Ability to work under pressure in a detail-oriented, rigorous, and collaborative manner.</li></ul><h2><strong>We offer</strong></h2><ul><li>A full-time position for a limited term, 12-month contract, with an anticipated start date of&nbsp;1 March 2026 with the possibility for extension depending on performance and funding availability;</li><li>Highly motivated, growing, and diverse team;</li><li>Annual leave entitlement of 26 days;</li><li>Training opportunities; and</li><li>Flexible work environment.</li></ul><p>The salary range for this role for candidates working in Berlin is&nbsp;between 3.500 and 4.000 EUR monthly gross salary, subject to experience.&nbsp;</p><p>To apply, please send&nbsp;<strong>your CV</strong> and a&nbsp;<strong>cover letter</strong> describing how you meet the position requirements to hr [at] mnemonic.org before&nbsp;<strong>8 January 2026</strong>, mentioning in the subject line of the email&nbsp; “Legal advisor application.”</p>
